This map is excellent for all levels. It is a hill with many rock features near the top and number of sinkholes and reentrants throughout the park. The east side is deep valley with a stream running through. At the top of the hill there are lookout towers and trails. The park also features a swimming pool and spring house. This park has wild parsnip and poison ivy, mainly in the open areas.
This park boasts the state's largest prairie. The park is a mix of wetlands and prairie. In Spring expect fast open running, but in Fall the grass can grow over your head. Beware of wild parsnip in some of the fields. This park used to be an airport and is named after an officer Bong. The difficulty level isn't high at this park, and the mapping is suspect.
Cat's Meow is some of the best terrain I have ever scene. Similar to Ottawa Trails, it has numerous depressions. However, this area has few trails and open areas. This makes it a very challenging area. The forest is sometimes very open, but also has many areas which aren't white woods. Prickly brambles are rare. Currently, this area is a work in progress. It will only get bigger and better in the next few years. Don't miss any opportunities to orienteer here if you are a serious competitor. I expect the final area mapped to be over 10 square K.
This map is the largest map in the club. It offers some of the best orienteering the club has to offer. There are a lot of rock features and rocky ground. It is suitable for all levels of orienteering. It is situated in the most popular state park in Wisconsin.
This map connects with the east bluff map. It also offers some of the best orienteering the club has to offer, and has are a lot of rock features and rocky ground. It is suitable for advanced orienteers. It is situated in the most popular state park in Wisconsin. There is a small area suitable for beginners that will be utilized at local events.
This map is small and the orienteering is relatively easy. It is suitable for beginner's and intermediate orienteering. Situated on a pennisula in Madison, WI it is a beautiful setting. The terrain is generally flat and there are many trails. Also in the middle of the map is an apartment complex.
Elver Park is a big city park. It has large open spaces, and the wooded areas have many trails. This park is good orienteering for beginner's and intermediates. It was fieldchecked in 1991 and has good detail.
Directions: Take Hwy 12 to the Gammon Road exit. Turn left, going south. Follow road to park.
This small map has fine kettle moraine features and lots of trails. It is suitable for all levels of orienteering.
Goose Lake is 1-15,000 scale. It has great detail and is suitable for all levels of orienteering. It has 3 land areas separated by marshes that can only be gotten around by going to the top of the map. The woods are very open in most places which makes this a fine orienteering location.
Governor Dodge was one of the first club maps. The park is beautiful with high cliffs and open fields. It was made using a USGS map as a basemap. There has been very little fieldchecking done at this park, so the map is of poor quality. The majority of the woods are thick. It is a great park to visit. But until improvements are made on the map, the orienteering will not be great.
Governor Nelson is a small state park that is over 50% fields. It has an extensive trail network. Map quality is high, but orienteering is at beginner/intermediate level only.
This is a small county park. The map was made from a USGS and is of poor quality. The woods are thick in many places.
Both these maps are situated in the Northern Kettle Moraine State Forest. Both are excellent for all levels of orienteering. Both of these maps have been used for national events.
This state park is ideal for beginners and intermediates. It is flat and has few fine features. There are plenty of trails and other handrails to guide you. This map is relatively small(2.5K^2) as well.
This map has fine kettle moraine features and lots of trails. It is suitable for all levels of orienteering. Some areas of forest are thick with vegetation(honeysuckle and buckthorn). There are also many fields.
This very small map(1/2K^2) consists of one big bluff with some very beautiful cliffs throughout the park. While the majority of the woods are reasonably open and pleasant, there is also a significant portion that is being overgrown with brambles. Excellent for beginners and fun for advanced the first couple of visits.
Both these maps are situated in the Northern Kettle Moraine State Forest. Both are excellent for all levels of orienteering. Both of these maps have been used for national events.
McCarthy County Park is mostly fields with a few wooded areas. There is a small river and some wetlands along with a few hills. It is a good beginner area.
Mirror Lake is unique in that the ground is sandy. It's a nice place for a run, since the woods are fairly open. But the area isn't particularly technical. There is room to expand this map. But due to the proximity to Devil's Lake and distance away from our usual base of support, we haven't used this map much recently.
Ottawa Trails is in the southern kettle moraine forest. It is loaded with depressions, large and small. It also has large areas of fields and pine plantations. There is also quite a lot of prickly ash in some areas. Completed in the summer of 1997, this map offers a great challenge even for the experienced orienteer. However, it is in need of an update.
Quarry Park is an old quarry. It is undeveloped and is used by bmx type bikers. There are trails everywhere in this tiny park. The great density of trails actually makes this an interesting place to orienteer, since keeping track of where you are in the bumpy terrain can be quite challenging.
Warner Park is a Madison city park. It is mostly flat with a large lagoon. It also has sports fields, tennis courts, a dog park some wooded areas.
Wildcat Mound is a very enjoyable place for orienteering. The area includes oak forest and pine stands in sandy soil. Many areas have grass growing under the trees and nice open woods. The terrain will allow for fast orienteering, since it is not technically difficult.
