Welcome To Magic Horizons
Magic Horizons is a live action roleplaying game,
run in Wisconsin under the auspices of the
Wisconsin
chapter of the International
Fantasy Gaming Society. In addition, a
Chicago chapter has
formed, and chapters in California and New England are in the process
of germination. You've reached the Magic Horizons
information page.
What's A Live Action Roleplaying Game?
A live action roleplaying game is a cross between improvisational
acting (live action) and the more conventional table-top roleplaying
that you may have already heard of.
Like the conventional tabletop roleplaying games, the focus of play
is on your character. You'll create a character and play through the
course of many years improving their abilities. Characters will form
alliances, plan great deeds and change the face of the world that they
play in.
Unlike tabletop roleplaying, you perform many of your characters
actions, physically. If your character needs to run away from a
monster, you, as a player, need to be able to outrun the
person playing the monster. If your character is a fighter, you'll
want to be able to handle the business end of a safety-inspected
weapon.
What is Magic Horizons?
Magic Horizons is a fully realized world course game.
There is much more to do in a Magic Horizons game than
simply run around and slaughter monsters. Non-combat roles for
characters are entirely possible, plausible and encouraged, with a
great deal of depth given to the actual creation and sale of items
used in the game.
Because Magic Horizons is a world course game, the long
term benefits of roleplaying come into the fore. Rather than simply
running from individual adventure to individual adventure, all of the
actions that a player character takes in the game occur within a
framework of history and precedent. Important non-player characters
will recur from adventure to adventure, and the consequences of
failure and success can vary greatly. (For example, letting the Orc
tribes run roughshod over the farmers can result in food being scarce,
which affects your character's combat abilities.)
