A History Of Game Events For 1996
What follows is a brief capsule history of the games from the 1996 season.
Most of this is drawn from memory and notes taken at the game, and can be
considered suspect. If you have any information to add, please submit
it through the Email link at the bottom of the page.
- January 1996
- First playtest game. Rules draft circulated to players. The Pragmatic
Empire was introduced as a political entity. Plot consisted of evacuating
farmers from the fringe of the nomad lands to a more civilized locale
- February 1996
- A treaty was signed with the Bloody Fang tribe of great orcs. Port Mahon
was established as a game site.
- March 1996
- High level playtest day. Some characters were (temporarily) elevated to
12th level. Plot revolved around placing milestones on the Imperial road
network around Port Mahon.
- April 1996
- The son of a local merchant was kidnapped by bandits, and rescued, by PCs
from Port Mahon. First incidence of kern pods in the game.
- May 1996
- First outdoor game. Orcs, pressured by great orcs to the north of them,
and Port Mahon to the south, become more aggressive in their patrols. Another
set of mileposts was placed on the roads around Port Mahon, done by the
crafters, as only two fighter PCs are active.
- June 1996
- Goblins, pressured by the Orcs trying to take their land, start making more
aggressive patrols. A rash of Goblin thievery erupts and is suppressed, but not
before a major goblin lair is rooted out and destroyed. Another milestone is
laid to rest. The Guardians of Justice runs into a particularly nasty trap, and
gets stuck with a cursed lock.
- July 1996
- Characters deal with straggling goblin patrols, as the last of the goblin
resistance is snuffed out like a candle. The first major armed encounter with
an Orc tribe happens. The first inter-PC armed conflict begins.
- August 1996
- Graspin the Wizard becomes the focal point for the Black Forest's
malevolent designs. He, along with his undead legions, are barely stopped by
the concerted efforts of two player groups, the Cuisinart Corps and the Black
Company.
- September 1996
- Lady Commander Nerissa steps down as head of the Port Mahon Garrison, just
as a bad case of food spoilage renders most of the garrison too ill to lean
against a pikestaff. The Stonedweller goblin tribe is discovered in a set of
Hellenic ruins. After baffling both the Black Company and the Cuisinart Corps,
they are left alone, and several people conduct trade with them. Orcs and
goblins make several raids on area farmers to gain supplies for the winters.
All of the raids are repulsed by PCs.
- October 1996
- The Cuisinart Corps takes another attempt on the Stonedweller goblin tribe,
and gives up, resolving to come another time. A surveyor for the Imperial
Bureau of Roads, Standards and Measures arrives to investigate the Black Forest.
A major orc lair is discovered and rooted out.
- November 1996
- A wandering con artist NPC does a great job of bilking the PCs with shoddy
strength potions, and the Commander of the Garrison is found, poisoned by an
unknown miscreant. The cursed lock is sold to a member of the Cuisinart Corps
by the Guardians of Justice, and is then stolen by said con artist NPC. A
wandering Creation Philosopher finds employment in Port Mahon, shortly before a
box explodes. A building boom begins in Port Mahon, followed by a great orc
challenge tournament.
- December 1996
- Due to the holiday season, no game was scheduled for this month. In game,
a terrible storm system has smashed into Port Mahon. The December supply ship
never arrived from the Pragmatic Empire.
